Light Distribution Types for Solar Street Light

Introduce of Light Distribution

The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) has introduced a classification system for light distribution patterns. The main purpose is for people to select the right outdoor lighting fixtures. The system includes five “types” (Type I – Type V) and is very concise and practical, making it easy to identify the distribution pattern of a luminaire and match it correctly to the right application.  In many solar streetlights LED replacement bid documents, contractors are asked to provide luminaires that meet Type I, Type II, Type III, Type IV, or Type V light distribution patterns.

Light Distribution

What are the different types of Light Distribution

Type 1 light distribution

The distribution of Type I has a lineal symmetrical light pattern. It is the best choice for applications like double lane roads, sidewalks, paths. Due to the preferred lateral width of 15 degrees, it is suitable for roads with a width of two times the installation height.

Application:

  • Two-lane roads
  • Sidewalks
  • walkways

Type 2 light distribution

Type II Provides a lateral width of 25 degrees, it is the ideal choice to luminaires located at or near the side of relatively narrow roadways or any area requiring long, narrow lighting. When considering area width, Type II is best for illuminating areas with a width that are no more than 1.75 times the height the fixtures will be mounted.

Application:

  • wide walkways
  • Emergency Exit
  • Residential areas
  • Narrow roadways

Type 3 light distribution

Type III has a preferred lateral width of 40 degrees. This kind has a larger location of illumination from a placement along the boundary of where illumination is needed. So, it is adapted to brighten the highways, parking area, garage, driveway, as well as area like football pitch, tennis, amusement park and also more. It is optimal for lighting locations with a width no greater than 2.75 times the mounting elevation.

Application:

  • Driveways, Highways
  • Football pitch
  • Parking Lot
  • Shopping plaze
  • Park

Type 4 light distribution

The type IV distribution generates a semicircular light with a lateral width of 60 degrees, known as a “onward throw” circulation, it is for installing on the sides of buildings as well as wall surfaces. As well as it is ideal for brightening the boundary of parking areas as well as organizations. It is best for areas as much as 2.75 times the mounting elevation in size.

Application:

  • Perimeter
  • Parking Area
  • wide roadways

Type 5 light distribution

Type V casting a circular pattern of 360°distribution that has equal light distribution at all positions. Having the same distribution at all lateral angles.
Type V distributions provide the largest, most even pattern of light. Therefore, it is intended for luminaire mounting at or near the center of wide roadways, center place of the parking lots, and intersections

Application:

  • Central Islands of Roadways
  • Large outdoor parking lots
  • intersections
